After seeing his son off to school in the mornings and before making his way to Way Way Out There (his studio and gallery), he cruises out to ride the breaking ocean waves on his board.
In his surf-inspired paintings and drawings, you’ll find faceless people riding waves in a bold, minimalistic, color-blocking style. He has a distinct style that stands out from others, which has helped him become a successful creator. Andy is seen as a legendary modern artist in surf culture.
In an interview with Sun Bum, Andy explains that choosing to make the characters faceless allows fluidity in the mind of the observer. This way each person can have freedom to attach their own individual feelings to the experience surfing brings to them. The title “Free” truly embodied the path in which he was setting out for himself. A traditional path – entailing graduating from high school, moving onto college, and then into a conventional career – was not a fitting future he saw for himself. Without the help of his supportive parents, he would not have been able to pursue this direction. Family is everything to him and he expresses gratitude for these opportunities and vital support on a daily basis.
