The brothers behind the formation of Entropy Resins always had an interest in science and the nature around them. Cupertino natives, Desi and Rey Banato, wanted to create composites and building materials that are better for the environment. Thus, Entropy Resins was founded to “make things better“ by creating epoxy using a biobased formula. Using a biobased formula makes the products more eco-friendly than its traditional ingredients that create epoxy resin through a chemical reaction.
Entropy Resins explains that their process involves renewable raw materials and helps to, “conserve energy, minimize harmful byproducts, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The company prides itself on providing full transparency to customers by sharing the product’s life cycle, which evaluates its impact on the environment from start to finish.
But what does it mean to be biobased? The company explains that they have replaced petroleum-based raw materials with plant material while also keeping track of the percentage of carbon in their product. Because of this, they are a part of the Bio preferred Program with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program’s overall goal is to eliminate dependence on petroleum-derived products, create new jobs and stimulate economic development by increasing biobased products. These products range from lubricants and detergents to fertilizers and bioplastics.
Bioplastics are another kind of biobased product that is made from renewable sources.
While traditional plastics are derived from petroleum, bioplastics are made from renewable feedstock like corn and sugarcane to decompose under natural conditions. While they still contain chemicals like traditional plastic, bioplastics degrade faster than the 1,000-year life span regular plastic has. Even though the chemicals in bioplastics may still have effects on living cells, bioplastics offer an alternative to the growing waste problem that single-use plastic has created. Two hundred million tons of plastic are consumed in one year alone. Bioplastics save energy in their production and reduce the carbon footprint by eliminating the dependence on crude oil. The production of bioplastics can be found across a variety of industries. The medical field, the food industry, along the fashion sector have incorporated bioplastics in some way.
