Food sustainability isn’t always at the forefront of our minds. Our decisions are usually based on convenience, taste and price.

This is why having a better understanding of what makes food sustainable can help us make more informed decisions and it would allow us to weigh products and brands more easily.

With that being said, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Does This Brand Have Sustainable Farming Practices?

Food production needs to be profitable; if not, farmers would go out of business. However, this doesn’t have to mean mass-scale food production, which results in bad news for animals and the environment.

Sustainable farming has the goal of maintaining or increasing output while simultaneously increasing the environmental benefits.

Does This Brand Have a Low Environmental Impact?

Sustainable food wants to avoid wasting natural resources; it also minimizes its contribution to climate change during the production process.

The use of the earth’s resources is also considered, including the use of energy in transportation and storage.

Ideally, any negative impact is minimized while aiming to produce food in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

Does This Company Prioritize Animal Wellbeing?

Sustainable farmers use livestock techniques that protect the animals’ health and wellbeing. This means they provide pasture grazing and allow animals to move freely while taking in the sun and fresh air.

Animals are not confined to a cage or locked up in holding pens. This all ensures that animals are treated with care and respect.
