1% for the Planet 2020 Annual Report

A year of change

It all started with a simple concept: giving 1% of sales back to the environment. In 2002, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, created 1% for the Planet and started a global movement. Today, 1% for the Planet has a network of more than 3,000 members coming together to protect the future of our planet.

Despite being a challenging year all around, 2020 was a defining year for 1% for the Planet. The environmental crisis did not pause because of a pandemic. In fact, the metrics highlighted in 1% for the Planet’s 2020 Annual Report tell a story of hope.

  • Their annual member survey highlighted 94% of business members as “likely” or “very likely” to recommend business membership to other businesses. In 2021, they plan to administer additional quarterly satisfaction surveys to ensure a good pulse on their community.
  • In addition to enhancements to policies and benefits, 1% for the Planet supported staff with stipends to ensure WFH comfort: they also gave each employee a gift card of their choice to invest in their local community during this uncertain time.
  • The team embarked on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion training with the vision of building a vibrant culture that serves as a model for other organizations.
  • In 2020, 1% for the Planet secured some larger-revenue members (notably, OXO) to their thriving community, therefore exceeding their yearly target with over $10M in total revenue.
  • In 2020, wildfires devastated communities around the world. In response, the 1% for the Planet network stepped in to provide support.
  • 1% for the Planet welcomed more justice-focused nonprofits into their network to amplify the voices fighting for racial equality.
  • 1% for the Planet found creative ways to offer aid, relief, and hope during the pandemic - like having members give directly to organizations like Feeding America.

You have a whole life in the outdoors, you realize you have a sense of responsibility to protect these wild places.

Yvon Chouinard

Founder of Patagonia & 1% for the Planet

The year 2020 surfaced urgent issues of our time, including wildfires, social injustices, and a pandemic. The 1% for the Planet team went fully remote and had to postpone their Annual Global Summit. Nonetheless, they managed to strengthen their community internally, externally, and internationally. All while serving business members, investing in employees, securing big brands, and boosting brand awareness. Their certified member giving number was $32M - a key metric that indicates they are delivering on their value proposition.

Looking forward, 1% for the Planet aims to become the most recognized global environmental community. A network momentum is proud to be a part of!
